Why Does My Phone Say No Service?

Tech Made Simple blog cover for a phone saying no service

This is for you if… your phone says No Service, SOS only, Emergency Calls Only, or shows no signal bars.

I was helping someone in Red Lodge who thought their phone had failed, but Airplane Mode had been switched on by accident. A small setting can look like a big problem.

Simple checks

  • Turn Airplane Mode on and off.
  • Restart the phone.
  • Check whether other people nearby have signal.
  • Remove and reseat the SIM if your phone has one.
  • Check for a network outage with your provider.

Could it be your account?

If a bill payment has failed or a SIM has been replaced, service may stop until the provider fixes the account. Contact them using Wi-Fi or another phone.

When settings help

Sometimes resetting network settings can help, but make sure you know your Wi-Fi password first because saved Wi-Fi networks may be removed.
