Why Does My Phone Get Hot?

Tech Made Simple blog cover for a phone getting hot

This is for you if… your phone feels hot in your hand, especially while charging, using maps, video calling or sitting in the sun.

I was helping someone in Newmarket after their phone became hot during a long video call while it was plugged in. That combination can make any phone work hard.

Normal reasons phones get warm

  • Charging while using the phone.
  • Video calls, games or maps.
  • Installing updates.
  • Hot weather or direct sunlight.
  • A thick case trapping heat.

What to do

Unplug it, close demanding apps, remove the case, and let it cool somewhere shaded. Do not put it in a fridge or freezer, as sudden temperature changes can cause damage.

When to take it seriously

If the phone is too hot to hold, smells odd, swells, shuts down repeatedly or gets hot doing nothing, stop using it and get advice. Battery problems should not be ignored.
