Why Can’t I Hear People Properly on Phone Calls?

Tech Made Simple blog cover for trouble hearing phone calls

This is for you if… phone calls sound quiet, muffled, crackly or distant, even when the volume seems high.

I was helping someone in Fairfield who thought their speaker had failed. The phone was actually sending calls to an old Bluetooth device in another room.

Check the basics during a call

  • Press the volume up button while the call is active.
  • Try speakerphone.
  • Turn Bluetooth off briefly.
  • Remove the case and check it is not covering the speaker or microphone.
  • Check whether a screen protector is blocking the earpiece.

Is it every call?

If it only happens with one person, the issue may be their phone, their signal or their microphone. If it happens with everyone, your phone or network is more likely involved.

Clean gently

Dust in the earpiece can make calls sound muffled. Clean gently with a soft, dry brush. Do not poke sharp objects into the phone.
