Why Are Some of My Contacts Showing Twice?

Tech Made Simple illustrated cover for duplicate contacts

This is for you if… your contacts list has two or three versions of the same person and you are worried about deleting the wrong one.

I was helping someone in Stotfold whose contacts appeared twice after a new phone transfer. The phone was showing contacts from both Google and iCloud, so it looked as though everything had doubled overnight.

Why duplicate contacts happen

Most duplicates are caused by the same people being stored in more than one place. Your phone may be showing contacts from iCloud, Google, Outlook, WhatsApp, a SIM card or an old phone transfer at the same time.

What to check before deleting anything

  • Open one duplicate contact and look for which account it belongs to.
  • Check whether contacts are backed up to iCloud or Google.
  • Look for a “merge duplicates” option in Contacts.
  • Do not delete a whole account unless you are sure what it contains.
  • Save important phone numbers before making big changes.

The safest way to tidy them

If your phone offers a merge or link contacts option, use that first. It combines matching entries without removing useful details like home number, mobile number or email address.

When duplicates keep coming back

This usually means the same contacts are syncing from multiple accounts. Turning off one contact source can help, but it is worth checking carefully so you do not hide the only copy of someone important.
