I was helping someone in Royston who thought their phone camera had failed. The main issue was a smudged lens and the phone focusing on the background instead of the person.
Common reasons photos look blurry
Blurry photos are often caused by a dirty camera lens, movement while taking the photo, poor lighting, zooming in too far, focus locking on the wrong object, or sending the photo through an app that compresses it.
Quick fixes to try
- Wipe the camera lens gently with a soft cloth.
- Hold the phone steady and tap the subject on the screen.
- Move closer instead of using lots of digital zoom.
- Use better lighting where possible.
- Take two or three photos so you have a backup.
When photos look worse after sending
Some apps shrink photos to save data. A picture may look fine on your phone but blurry after being sent by text, WhatsApp or email. Sending as a file or choosing high quality can help.
When to worry about the camera
If every photo is blurry even after cleaning the lens, restarting the phone and testing in good light, the camera may have a fault. It is worth checking settings before replacing the phone.
