This is for you if… you have heard about Apple Pay or Google Pay but are unsure what they do, whether they are safe, or how they are different from using your card.
I was helping someone in Cambridge who wanted to pay for parking without hunting for their card. Once we set up their phone wallet and tested it carefully, they felt much more confident.
What Apple Pay and Google Pay are
They let you add a debit or credit card to your phone so you can pay in shops, on transport, in apps and on some websites. Apple Pay is for iPhone. Google Pay or Google Wallet is for many Android phones.
How paying works
You usually wake the phone, confirm it is you with face, fingerprint, passcode or screen lock, then hold the phone near the card reader. The shop does not see your actual card number in the same way as a normal card payment.
What to check before setting it up
- Use the official Wallet app on your phone.
- Only add cards you recognise and use.
- Make sure your phone has a screen lock.
- Follow your bank’s verification steps.
- Know how to remove a card if the phone is lost.
Is it compulsory?
No. It is a convenience, not a requirement. If you prefer using your physical card, that is completely fine. The best choice is the one you understand and feel comfortable using.
