Recently, I was helping someone near Stotfold who had changed their number and then found that a few important sign-in codes were still going to the old one. Nothing dramatic had gone wrong, but it made everyday things like banking and email feel stressful.
Your phone number is not just a way for people to call you. It is often connected to passwords, security checks, WhatsApp, delivery updates, NHS messages and banking alerts.
Why Your Phone Number Matters
Many accounts use your mobile number to prove it is you. If the account still has your old number, a reset code or security alert may go somewhere you can no longer access.
Before You Change Number
Check your Apple Account or Google Account recovery details
Update banking and credit card contact details
Check your main email recovery number
Use WhatsApp’s change number option if needed
Update NHS, GP, pharmacy and delivery accounts
Tell close family and trusted contacts
What Happens to WhatsApp?
WhatsApp has a change number feature. It is better to use that than simply deleting the app and starting again. It helps move your account information, groups and settings to the new number.
It is still worth sending important contacts a separate message, especially if they might worry about scam “new number” messages.
What About Banking Apps?
Banking apps can be sensitive because they often use your number for alerts and security checks. Before switching, open each banking app and check your contact details. If unsure, call the bank using the number on your card.
What About Two-Step Verification?
Two-step verification is useful, but it can catch you out if codes go to the old number. Check whether important accounts have a backup email address, recovery codes or an authenticator app.
After the Change
Send and receive a text message.
Make and receive a call.
Check WhatsApp messages and groups.
Sign in to your main email account.
Check your banking app has the correct number.
A Simple Rule to Remember
Update important accounts before you lose access to the old number.
That one step can prevent a lot of account recovery problems later.
