How to Help an Older Parent With Their Phone Without Taking Over

Tech Made Simple blog cover for helping an older parent with their phone

This is for you if… you help a parent or older relative with their phone and want to make things easier without making them feel silly.

I was helping a family in Stotfold where the adult child had the best intentions, but kept doing every step for their parent. The parent got the problem fixed, but did not feel any more confident afterwards.

Ask before touching the phone

It sounds small, but asking “Would you like me to show you?” keeps the person in control. Phones are personal, and confidence grows when people feel respected.

Talk through what you are doing

Slow down. Say the step out loud, then let them do it. If they make a mistake, treat it as normal. Most phone problems are reversible.

Write down repeat steps

A short note can be better than a long explanation. Use clear words like “Open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, choose home network”. Avoid jargon.

Simplify without hiding everything

Remove unused apps from the home screen, enlarge text if needed, add important contacts, and make sure backups are working. The aim is independence, not dependence.
