This is for you if… you keep seeing storage messages, you are not sure whether your photos are in iCloud or Google Photos, or you are nervous about deleting anything in case it disappears forever.
Not long ago, I was helping someone in Arlesey who had thousands of family photos on their phone and one simple question: “Are these actually backed up?” That question comes up a lot, and it is a sensible one to ask before changing phones, clearing storage, or pressing delete.
Photos are often the most precious thing on a phone. The awkward part is that words like backup, sync, cloud storage and optimise storage all sound similar, but they do not always mean the same thing.
The Important Difference Between Backup and Sync
A backup usually means a copy is stored somewhere else. Sync means your phone and cloud account are kept in step.
That difference matters. If photos are synced, deleting a photo from one place can remove it from the other too. Before deleting anything, check how your phone is set up.
If You Use an iPhone
On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name at the top, then look for iCloud and Photos.
You are checking whether iCloud Photos is turned on, whether syncing is paused, and whether your iCloud storage is full. If iCloud storage is full, newer photos may not have uploaded safely.
If You Use Google Photos
Open the Google Photos app and tap your profile picture or initial. Look for the backup status. It may say backup complete, waiting for Wi-Fi, getting ready to back up, or storage full.
If it says storage is full or backup is paused, do not assume every photo is safe yet.

You recently changed Apple Account, Google Account or phone number
You have both iCloud Photos and Google Photos and are not sure which one you use
Before You Delete Photos
Connect the phone to Wi-Fi.
Plug it into power.
Open the photo app you use for backup.
Check the backup or sync status.
Look for older photos, not just recent ones.
If possible, check the photos from another device or web browser.
A Simple Rule to Remember
Do not delete photos to make space until you know where the other copy is.
That one sentence can save a lot of upset.
